Six Rounds, Five Apps and No Participation Trophies
Short-drama apps stopped being a fringe curiosity some time ago. For Q1 2025, Sensor Tower counted about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category, with the US generating 49% of it. The quarterly figure had grown to about $750M by Q1 2026, whereas full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B. Five names drive the conversation, namely ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave, and anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has come across at least one of them. On the surface, they look identical: vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute https://dramas-online.com/ or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. Underneath, they differ on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that shape what you pay and where you can watch. Six rounds, one winner per round: that is the format, and we relied on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Full Comparison Grid
This grid puts the full field on one screen before the rounds start. Prices are the figures shown in the US App Store as of September 2026, and they differ by country, platform and promotion. The install figures are drawn from each app’s Google Play listing. The market shares come from Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. Where a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source released the figure, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. The grid serves as the scoreboard, and the rounds below serve as the commentary.

Round 1: Owners and Scale
ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still holds the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA puts its share at about 29% of the market outside China. For 2026, MPA forecasts $1.05B, following 2025 revenue of $785M. With about 21%, DramaBox launched in April 2023 and is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. The newest app in this lineup is DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, yet it already holds about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly exceeded $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama, the smallest of the group with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. Operating from Hong Kong, ShortMax seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. For context, GoodShort, which sits just outside this lineup, holds about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, by a narrow margin, on market share.
Round 2: What It Costs
In this round, the apps seem most alike. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave sells a weekly pass at around $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. Beyond that, ShortMax lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. Auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99, show the different route DramaBox takes. The real standout is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Because four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass total about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the better buy for steady viewers. Prices vary by country, platform and promotion, so the number on your screen may differ. Winner: DramaWave, because its monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin.
Round 3: Watching for Free
Free viewing is where the marketing turns loud and the details grow thin. The first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, according to ReelShort’s own blog, and one rewarded ad opens up two premium episodes. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Want the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying? ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Keep away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Winner: clearly ReelShort.
Round 4: Where You Can Watch
When it comes to screens, these apps truly part ways. ReelShort is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress that syncs across devices. ShortMax offers web browsing too, since its domain points to the ShortTV website. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app. With an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama holds the trump card. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort on balance, though My Drama claims the living room.
Round 5: Library Size and Originals
No rival matches ShortMax on raw numbers. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. As of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, and most of them were dubbed Chinese adaptations. According to reports, more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox responds with an LA production team and originals like Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. The most intriguing pipeline belongs to My Drama, because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.
Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print
DramaWave comfortably takes this one. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video appear in its App Store listing, and no rival here is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. Because it varies more than the prices do, the fine print deserves a look too. According to ShortMax’s terms, refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. On any of these apps, cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead, since deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Winner: DramaWave, with room to spare.
Best For: The Final Verdict
No single short drama app wins every round, so the best choice depends on how you watch. My Drama is best for Apple TV, since it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. For web viewing, ReelShort is best, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, since it pairs offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. ShortMax is best for sheer volume, since its claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid. DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader, as it was ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. Best for free, legitimate sampling is ReelShort again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Feeling tempted by all five? Pick one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
